ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has challenged the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) over its claim that it was not allowed to formulate a policy against terrorism, asking the party to explain what had prevented it from taking action against terrorism during its years in power.

In a detailed post on social media on Monday, Khawaja Asif said the PTI had repeatedly advanced the argument that it was not given an opportunity to formulate a counter-terrorism policy.

He rejected the claim and posed eight questions to the party, pointing out that the PTI had been in power in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for about 13 years and had also governed at the federal level.

“Who stopped you from formulating a policy against terrorism?” Asif asked, questioning which policy, if any, had prevented the PTI governments from implementing the National Action Plan (NAP) or holding meetings of the Apex Committees.

The defence minister said condemning terrorism and publicly supporting the security forces did not require any special policy. “To call a terrorist a terrorist, to condemn terrorists coming from Afghanistan, and to openly stand with the forces against attacks on the Pakistan Army and the people – what policy do you need for that?” he asked.

Asif also questioned the response of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to recent drone attacks in the Kohat area, asking why the provincial authorities had not openly condemned the attacks.

“Which policy kept stopping you?” he asked. Referring to security incidents along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, the minister said Pakistani border posts and military personnel had faced firing from Afghan territory, while infiltration and direct or indirect support to terrorists had also remained issues.

He asked the PTI how many times it had formally protested against or condemned such violations while specifically naming the Afghan authorities. “What ‘policy’ is needed for that?” he asked.

Khawaja Asif also criticised the PTI government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa over what he described as illegal economic activities that could support terrorism, including extortion, smuggling and the trade in non-customs-paid vehicles.

He asked the party to explain what practical measures it had taken during its years in provincial power to eliminate such activities. The minister further questioned the PTI’s solidarity with security personnel fighting terrorism and with victims of terrorism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

He asked how many times PTI leaders had visited security posts to express solidarity with troops and how often they had visited families who had lost loved ones to terrorism.

Asif also accused the PTI of creating confusion around the state’s narrative against terrorism. He asked why the party did not explicitly condemn terrorists whom he referred to as “Kharijites” and why it did not identify and condemn them by name.

“Why do you confuse the narrative of the state of Pakistan against terrorism through various tactics and methods?” he asked. The minister said these issues led to only one conclusion about the PTI’s 13 years of governance in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

He added that the provincial government had overseen an “unprecedented” increase in corruption and that the party had plundered provincial resources.

Asif also referred to allegations exchanged publicly by PTI’s own national and provincial lawmakers, saying party members had accused one another on social media of misappropriating millions and billions of rupees.

He further stated that a female PTI MNA had publicly said that millions received from abroad had been spent on party organisational activities.
