NEW DELHI: India’s Cockroach Janta Party has emerged as a fresh headache for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, as a satirical online movement turns youth anger into street mobilisation against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

Founded by Abhijeet Dipke, the movement gained rapid popularity on social media by tapping into frustration over unemployment, examination scandals and rising inequality.

The group attracted millions of Instagram followers within weeks, becoming one of the largest online youth-led platforms challenging Modi’s long rule.

The movement has now moved from digital satire to public protest. Dipke arrived in New Delhi to lead demonstrations at Jantar Mantar, where supporters demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over examination irregularities, including the controversy surrounding the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test.

The Cockroach Janta Party’s rise worries the Modi government because it speaks directly to India’s young population, many of whom are angry over joblessness and repeated paper leaks.

According to Reuters, India has nearly 400 million people aged between 15 and 29, while youth unemployment was around 14 per cent in April.

The group has also become a symbol of the shrinking space for dissent in India. Reports said the government blocked the group’s X account in India, while the movement has faced official criticism and legal pressure.

Supporters say the campaign is peaceful and constitutional. The group urged protesters to carry the national flag and books, avoid provocation and remain disciplined during the Jantar Mantar demonstration.

For Modi’s government, the challenge is not only the protest itself but the message behind it. The movement has turned satire into political resistance, using humour to expose public anger over education failures, unemployment and democratic freedoms.

As criticism grows over the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Hindutva-driven politics and its handling of dissent, the Cockroach Janta Party has become a new symbol of youth frustration in India.
