LONDON: Special envoys from Germany, France, the UK, Italy, and the US will meet in Washington on Friday to discuss next steps in Libya after rival parties in the country last week failed to reach a final agreement in Cairo for national elections. According to The Guardian, West is growing increasingly impatient with Libyan politicians after they (politicians) did not finalize plans for elections. One Western envoy told The Guardian that they may have to stop hoping they can persuade these people to agree to polls.
US, UK to discuss next step in Libya
Friday’s meeting in Washington, was convened by US Special Envoy Richard Norland. The aim of the meeting is to look at how to conduct elections and whether a deadline for forming a national Libyan body to agree on them is essential.
Unelected interim administrations have run the country for nearly twenty years now, with efforts to conduct presidential and parliamentary polls in 2018 and 2021 cancelled, while last year’s polls were also canceled because of disputes over the qualifications of candidates.
