BAGOTA, Columbia: Three individuals, including Police Officer Santiago Moreno Rios, lost their lives in a car bombing incident in Colombia.
The explosion, caused by an explosive device placed in a private vehicle, also injured eight others, including two officers and six civilians. The attack occurred in an area known for the presence of the Estado Mayor Central (EMC), a dissident group of the FARC rebels who have remained active despite the 2016 peace agreement.
President Gustavo Petro condemned the violence, expressing solidarity with the victims’ families and reaffirming the government’s commitment to upholding the law. The incident coincides with ongoing negotiations scheduled on Monday in Caracas between the Colombian government and representatives of another dissident group, Segunda Marquetalia. These talks aim to address the persistent challenges posed by armed groups that have rejected the peace process.
The recent surge in violence underscores the complex security situation in Colombia’s rural regions, where armed groups continue to operate, posing a threat to civilians and security forces alike.
