ISLAMABAD: Following rumors of getting sacked swirled for a few days, Vietnam’s President Nguyen Xuan Phuc resigned on Tuesday as stated by the country’s state media. The communist country is witnessing a major anti-corruption drive with a number of ministers being fired.
Normally in Vietnam political changes are carefully played down to maintain stability thus the president’s move is highly unusual. Just one other president of the Communist Party has ever quit, and too for health reasons.
Vietnam Centre for Economic and Strategic Studies (VESS) researcher Nguyen Khac Giang said that in the history of the party, President Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s resignation was an unprecedented move.

State media has revealed that the Communist Party has ruled President Nguyen Xuan Phuc was responsible for corruption by senior ministers under him during his 2016-2021 term as the country’s premier. After his premiership was over became the president.
Earlier this month, two deputy PMs were sacked as part of the purge. Several of the graft allegations are related to deals agreed upon as part of the country’s Covid-19 response.
