Uzbekistan President Explores Defence Cooperation with Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on Thursday visited Pakistan’s premier defence facility, Global Industrial & Defence Solutions (GIDS), signalling growing cooperation between the two countries in defence, technology and industrial sectors.

The visit took place during Mirziyoyev’s state visit to Pakistan. He was accompanied by senior Uzbek ministers and officials.

Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, received the Uzbek president at the facility and accompanied him during a detailed tour, according to a statement issued by the military’s media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

During the visit, the Uzbek delegation was briefed on GIDS’ diverse portfolio, which includes advanced defence solutions, industrial capabilities, and technological innovations.

The delegation toured key facilities and witnessed various defence products reflecting Pakistan’s growing expertise in indigenous defence production and industrial development, the ISPR said.

The delegation also observed a range of defence products and systems, reflecting Pakistan’s expanding capabilities in modern military technologies.

The visit underscored the shared commitment of Pakistan and Uzbekistan to deepen collaboration in defence, technology, and industrial sectors, the ISPR said.

Both sides emphasised the importance of enhancing partnerships, knowledge exchange and joint ventures.

The visit marked a significant step toward strengthening bilateral ties and exploring multifarious avenues of cooperation between Pakistan and Uzbekistan.

Uzbekistan President’s visit to Pakistan

President Mirziyoyev is on a two-day official visit to Pakistan aimed at deepening bilateral ties.

Later, he held talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad, where the two sides exchanged 28 agreements and memorandums of understanding covering sectors including defence, trade, connectivity, agriculture, information technology and climate change.

The two leaders also issued a joint declaration reaffirming their commitment to expand economic cooperation and regional connectivity.

Mirziyoyev was accorded a warm welcome, including a 21-gun salute, upon his arrival in Islamabad.

This is President Mirziyoyev’s second visit to Pakistan in four years, underscoring growing engagement between Islamabad and Tashkent in trade, investment and strategic cooperation.
