Uzbek Workers Fill Gap in Bulgarian Tourism Sector as Population Shrinks

ALBENA, Bulgaria: Hit by the mass departure of its residents after the fall of communism, Central and Eastern Europe has been welcoming workers from Asia for years. In Bulgaria, they have become indispensable to the tourism sector, which accounts for almost seven percent of the economy. “When it comes to Bulgaria,” says 20-year-old Gulraykhan Muxanbetovna from Uzbekistan, “everything is like a dream.”
