WASHINGTON: US Senator Bernie Sanders has urged President Donald Trump to end the war in Iran, sharply criticising the president over his suggestion that the strategic Strait of Hormuz could be renamed after him.
In a post on X on Thursday, Sanders rejected the proposal to rename the crucial waterway, arguing that Americans were more concerned about the economic impact of the conflict than giving it a new name.

“No, Mr Trump. The American people don’t want you to rename the Strait of Hormuz after yourself,” Sanders said. The independent senator instead called on Trump to end what he described as an “illegal war in Iran”, while linking the conflict to a sharp increase in fuel prices in the United States.

According to Sanders, diesel prices had risen to $5.69 a gallon, while petrol prices had reached $4.12 a gallon. “You’re the President, not a mad king. Act like it,” Sanders said in his strongly worded message.
Trump has suggested calling the strategic waterway the “Trump Strait” amid the ongoing conflict with Iran. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes, serving as a key passage for global energy supplies. Any disruption to shipping through the waterway can have significant consequences for international oil markets and fuel prices.
