WASHINGTON: The United States and Iran exchanged fresh military strikes early Saturday, as US forces targeted Iranian radar installations along the Gulf coast and Tehran launched new missile and drone attacks towards Kuwait and Bahrain, raising fears of a wider regional escalation despite a ceasefire that has been in place since April.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the drones posed an immediate threat to maritime traffic in one of the world’s most important shipping lanes, adding that the strikes were intended to prevent further attacks.

It said its forces shot down four Iranian one-way attack drones that were launched towards the strategically important Strait of Hormuz on Friday.

It added that US aircraft subsequently struck coastal surveillance radar sites in the city of Goruk and on Qeshm Island.

“The attack drones posed an immediate threat to regional maritime traffic,” while the strikes on radar installations “defend against further attacks,” the statement said.

According to CENTCOM, the drones posed “an immediate threat” to regional maritime traffic, while the strikes were intended to prevent further attacks.

A ceasefire has been in place between the United States and Iran since April 8. Efforts to negotiate a more permanent settlement have so far failed to produce a breakthrough.

President Donald Trump, facing growing domestic pressure to end the conflict, acknowledged in an interview with NBC News that Iran still retains part of its military capability.

“They have some missiles, they have some drones. I would say, percentage-wise, maybe 21 or 22 percent of their missiles,” Mr Trump said.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said Saturday they hit “enemy bases” in the Gulf, state media reported.

“Following the invasion of the child-killing and terrorist US army into Sirik and Qeshm Island, enemy bases in the region were hit by aerial missiles,” state broadcaster IRIB reported, quoting the Guards.

Kuwait’s military said early Saturday it was responding to “hostile” missile and drone attacks, days after a strike on the country’s international airport killed one and wounded dozens.

“Kuwaiti air defenses are currently responding to hostile missile and drone attacks,” the military said on X, without specifying their origin.

Two days earlier, Kuwait said it had intercepted 30 ballistic missiles fired as part of “heinous Iranian aggression.”

An air raid alert was also issued in Bahrain, the Gulf country’s interior ministry said Saturday, after new US airstrikes in Iran and Kuwait’s announcement of intercepting missiles and drones.

“The siren has been sounded ..Citizens and residents are urged to remain calm and head to the nearest safe place,” the ministry said on X.
