PHUKET, Thailand: The US aircraft carrier George H.W. Bush arrived off Thailand’s resort island of Phuket on Sunday, carrying around 4,800 personnel for a rest-and-recreation break following months of supporting US military operations in the Middle East.
The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier had been operating in the Arabian Sea during the conflict with Iran, according to multiple media reports. The carrier is expected to remain anchored offshore while its crew members come ashore through Phuket Deep Sea Port, local media reported.

The visit comes after an extended period of operations in and around the Middle East, where the carrier and its strike group have supported US military activities amid heightened regional tensions.
The George H.W. Bush, named after the 41st US president, is one of the US Navy’s Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and can carry thousands of sailors and other personnel as well as a large complement of military aircraft.
The Phuket stop is intended to provide personnel with an opportunity to rest and recuperate before the carrier resumes its wider deployment.
