WASHINGTON: The United States (U.S.) and Turkey convened a series of discussions on at the State Department in Washington, delving into critical issues including Syria, Ukraine, Gaza, defence industry collaboration, and counterterrorism efforts, as announced by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
Throughout the sessions, officials from both nations engaged in comprehensive dialogues regarding the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, alongside addressing various bilateral concerns. These meetings, part of the Strategic Mechanism framework, aimed to navigate policy disparities and enhance cooperation across multiple domains.
Despite recent strains in their relationship, the NATO allies sought to leverage the renewed momentum, particularly following Ankara’s endorsement of Sweden’s NATO membership bid. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized the significance of fostering a positive agenda and capitalizing on joint potentials to chart a constructive path forward.
Discussions encompassed a wide array of topics, including the urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza and concerted efforts to alleviate humanitarian crises while advocating for a viable two-state solution. Additionally, attention was directed towards addressing the conflict in Ukraine, with Ankara stressing the importance of dialogue to avert further escalation, although acknowledging the absence of mutual willingness from Kyiv and Moscow.
Key points of contention persist between the allies, notably Turkey’s procurement of Russian S-400 defence systems, triggering U.S. sanctions and its expulsion from the F-35 fighter jet program. Moreover, Ankara remains apprehensive about U.S. support for Kurdish militants in Syria, a source of enduring tension.
Despite these challenges, the strategic talks underscored both nations’ commitment to navigating complex geopolitical landscapes and fostering constructive engagement to advance shared interests while managing areas of disagreement.
