KABUL: The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has appealed for increased protection of the Hazara community in Afghanistan following an attack on Saturday evening in Kabul’s Dasht-e-Barchi area. The blast, targeting a minibus, resulted in a reported 25 casualties, according to UNAMA.

In an official statement on Sunday, UNAMA expressed deep concern, stating, “At least 25 members of Kabul’s Hazara community were killed or wounded in last night’s explosion.” The mission underscored the urgent need for an end to targeted attacks on civilians, specifically calling for increased protection for the Hazara community. UNAMA stressed the importance of holding those responsible for such acts accountable.

ISIS Claims Responsibility for Afghanistan Blast

The attack, widely condemned by Afghans, including former politicians, has been characterized as inhuman and a terrorist act. The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Daesh) has claimed responsibility for the explosion.

While the Taliban reported a lower casualty figure, confirming at least two deaths and 14 injuries, the incident has reignited concerns about the security situation in Afghanistan and the vulnerability of specific ethnic and religious communities, particularly the Hazara minority.
