CAIRO: A top official of the United Nations has called for more global attention to the crisis in Sudan, where more than a year and a half of conflict pushed the African nation to the brink of hunger, western media reported.
The fresh appeal by Ted Chaiban, deputy chief of the UN children’s agency UNICEF, came as the notorious paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) reportedly rampaged through towns and villages in east-central Gezira province, the AP reported. A youth group and doctors’ union stated that private and public properties were also looted in the area. Dozens of citizens were reported killed in the area.
According to Ted Chaiban, the conflict, which started in April 2023 between the RSF and Sudan’s military, created one of the most severe crises with over 14 million people forced to leave their houses, making the country the globe’s major displacement crisis.
The UN official told The Associated Press that 8.5 million people are confronting emergency levels of food shortage, and more than 775,000 others are confronting famine-like situation. He termed it a very worst situation. He said that the entire nation has been dislocated and yet, despite that, Sudan and the crisis is forgotten.
