UNITED NATIONS: United Nations (UN) Middle East envoy Tor Wennesland has vented his displeasure with the Israeli security forces for failing to prevent the vigilante mob attack on a Palestinian city last night, saying that ‘security forces have the duty to safeguard the security and prevent individuals from taking the law into their own hands’.

Wennesland stated in a written statement that he is “gravely concerned” about the deteriorating security situation. He expressed his condolences to the families of the two brothers from Israel killed on Sunday in Huwara, as well as the families of the Palestinians killed by Israelis in the town’s subsequent rampage. On Monday, a Palestinian man shot and critically wounded a 25-year-old Israeli man near Jericho, according to the international media.

The UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Wennesland, emphasised the importance of security forces in maintaining security and preventing individuals from taking the law into their own hands. He also stated that there is no justification for terrorism, arson, or acts of rage against civilians. All violent perpetrators must be held accountable. Violence, provocations, and incitement must end immediately and be condemned unequivocally by all.

Jordan hosted Palestinian and Israeli political security authorities on Sunday in Aqaba’s resort in an effort to quell rising violence ahead of Ramzan.

He urged both parties to make every effort to address the root causes of the conflict in accordance with UN resolutions, international law, and previous agreements. He stated that the UN remains committed to assisting Palestinians and Israelis in achieving a just and lasting peace.
