NEW YORK: The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said in a statement on the International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness that world leaders must prevent the use of lethal weapons.
In a statement, the UN Secretary-General urged international leaders to prioritize investments in peace and stability in their nations.
“Disarmament and non-proliferation are vital not only for a peaceful future but for our very survival. On this Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness Day, we must unite in a resounding voice. It is time to halt the madness. We require disarmament now,” The UN Chief said.
Meanwhile, Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, declared that since their return to power, all weapons have been gathered from irresponsible individuals and relocated to storage facilities.
He stated, “Weapons previously situated in camps and military installations have been collected, and numerous commissions have been established to conduct comprehensive investigations. This task has been accomplished, and unauthorized weapons are scarcely visible. Any remaining weapons are under strict control, and if discovered, they are promptly confiscated.”
Analysts hold diverse opinions regarding methods to curb the illegal trafficking of weapons in Afghanistan and other nations.
Military analyst Sarwar Niazi expressed concern, stating, “The escalation in illicit arms trafficking poses a threat to the sovereignty and security of any nation.” Similarly, Sadiq Shinwari, another military analyst, attributed the prolonged conflict in Afghanistan to widespread armament among the populace, stating, “Today, nearly every individual in Afghanistan is acquainted with weaponry, contributing to the prolonged warfare.”
Furthermore, a resolution was introduced to the United Nations General Assembly in 2021 in honour of the International Day for Disarmament Awareness and Non-Proliferation, subsequently adopted in 2022. This day is now commemorated annually in several countries worldwide.
