NEW YORK: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed the establishment of a transitional presidential council in Haiti, a nation grappling with severe gang violence.

Guterres has urged all Haitian stakeholders to maintain momentum in implementing transitional governance measures, including promptly appointing an interim prime minister and government, as well as nominating members for the provisional electoral council, he said in  statement released on Saturday.

The Secretary-General acknowledges the Transitional Presidential Council’s responsibilities, which include collaborating with the international community to expedite the deployment of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission, sanctioned by Security Council Resolution 2699 (2023).

He has reiterated his plea for all Member States to contribute to the MSS, emphasizing its significance in restoring stability.

On Friday, Haiti’s government formally established a nine-member transitional presidential council aimed at restoring security.

Since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021, political deadlock and escalating gang violence have plagued the country, resulting in thousands of casualties and prompting hundreds of thousands to flee.
