LUMBINI: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday appealed for peace from the birthplace of Buddha in Lumbini, Nepal, amidst escalating conflicts in regions such as Gaza, Ukraine, the Sahel, and Sudan. Guterres emphasized the urgency of embracing peace and understanding in today’s troubled world.

During his visit to Nepal, Guterres highlighted the pressing need for a ceasefire in Gaza amidst Israeli brutalities and continued air strikes. He described the ongoing violence as a “nightmare” of bloodshed. He expressed deep concern over the rampant conflict across the globe, noting that fundamental principles of human rights and international law are being undermined while global rules and institutions face threats.

UN Chief’s Message for Global Peace

“In these troubled times, my message to the world from the tranquil gardens of Lumbini is simple: Humanity has a choice. The path to peace is ours to take,” stated Guterres, emphasizing the power of humanity to choose a peaceful coexistence over conflict and division.

Guterres, who also visited the Everest region on Monday, highlighted the mounting impacts of the climate crisis. He warned that humanity finds itself at odds not only with nature but also within its own ranks. Reflecting on the urgent need for environmental stewardship, Guterres stressed the importance of addressing the climate crisis to secure a sustainable future for all.
