ISLAMABAD: Miguel Moratinos, a high official for the UN Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), on Sunday unequivocally condemned the vile act of burning the Holy Quran in Sweden on Saturday by a leader of the far-right party Hard Line.

He said in a statement issued from the UN headquarters in New York, it is insulting and disrespectful to Muslims and should not be conflated with freedom of expression.

Act of Quran burning is hatred towards Muslims

He further said that freedom of expression is a fundamental human right but the act of Quran burning is clearly a hatred towards Muslims.

Recalling the United Nations General Assembly resolution of January 26, 2021, that reaffirms that the exercise of freedom of expression carries responsibilities and duties, he expressed his deep concern at the rise of instances of discrimination, violence, and intolerance against members of religious and other communities including Islamophobia, Christian phobia, antisemitism prejudices against persons of other beliefs and religions.
