ISLAMABAD: Senior British Conservative politician and former UK minister Lord Tariq Ahmad of Wimbledon has praised Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts, saying Islamabad played a pivotal role in advancing negotiations between the United States and Iran, with both sides now appearing closer than ever to a peace agreement.

In a message posted on social media late Saturday, Lord Tariq Ahmad said people across the world were united in the hope that peace was imminent following the expected signing of an Islamabad memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran.

He acknowledged that the process had faced numerous obstacles and setbacks, but said Pakistan’s persistent and intensive diplomatic engagement had proved instrumental in keeping negotiations alive.

According to Lord Tariq Ahmad, the breakthrough was achieved through what he described as “relentless shuttle diplomacy” led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. He also commended Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi for their support throughout the process.

“Against all the odds, Pakistan’s efforts have played a crucial role,” he said, applauding the country’s leadership for helping steer the talks towards a possible settlement.

His remarks came hours after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that a peace agreement between the United States and Iran was closer than at any previous stage.

In a statement, the prime minister said the finalisation of the accord was expected within the next 24 hours, after which Pakistan was preparing for the electronic signing of the agreement, to be followed by technical-level discussions next week.

The developments have fuelled hopes of a diplomatic breakthrough that could ease tensions in the Middle East and mark a significant achievement for Pakistan’s mediation efforts on the international stage.
