MOSCOW: Five people were killed in a Ukrainian missile strike on the southwestern Russian city of Voronezh, regional authorities said, as Kyiv claimed responsibility for an attack on a facility involved in the production of key components for Russia’s missile programmes.
Voronezh Governor Alexander Gusev said the attack left five people dead and injured dozens more.
“Five people were killed as a result of the missile attack on the city. Several dozen people sought medical attention, but most have already been sent home after receiving medical care,” Gusev said on Telegram.
He added that an industrial facility in the city suffered significant damage.
“An industrial facility on the left bank of Voronezh, where a fire broke out, sustained the most significant damage,” he said, without identifying the site.
Ukraine Claims Military Target
Ukraine’s General Staff said its forces had carried out a strike on what it described as a key enterprise supporting Russia’s missile production.
In a statement, the military said it had “carried out successful strikes on an enterprise producing components for Russian missiles in the city of Voronezh”.
It added that the attack involved “high-precision, air-launched cruise missiles”.
According to Kyiv, the facility manufactures electronic components used in several Russian weapons systems.
“It manufactures electronic components heavily relied upon by Russian missile programs, including the Iskander missile system,” the General Staff said.
The Ukrainian military claimed the strike would have a direct impact on Russia’s weapons production.
“The strike will significantly degrade Russia’s capacity to manufacture new missiles,” it added.
Intensifying Long-Range Attacks
The latest exchange highlights the growing reach of the conflict, with both sides increasingly targeting military, industrial and energy infrastructure far from the battlefield.
Russia has subjected Ukrainian cities to near-daily missile and drone attacks since launching its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Kyiv has described its strikes inside Russia as a response to those attacks, saying it targets military facilities and infrastructure linked to Moscow’s war effort.
In recent months, Ukrainian forces have increasingly targeted defence-industrial facilities, oil refineries and logistics hubs inside Russian territory.
Peace Efforts Remain Stalled
The attack comes as diplomatic efforts to end Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II remain effectively frozen.
Despite periodic US-led attempts to revive negotiations, both Russia and Ukraine have intensified military operations in recent weeks, with neither side showing signs of scaling back attacks.
Analysts say the latest strike on Voronezh underscores how both countries are continuing to expand the scope of the conflict while pursuing strategic targets deep inside each other’s territory.
