NEW YORK: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in New York to address the United Nations General Assembly and make a fervent plea for more aid as Ukraine continues its high-stakes counteroffensive against Russian forces, which has been ongoing for more than 18 months.

During his speech at the famous UN rostrum on Tuesday, Zelensky is expected to seek strong condemnation of Russia for its ongoing invasion, which began in February 2022. His address comes as Ukraine grapples with the devastating consequences of the conflict.

In this unprecedented diplomatic doubleheader, Zelensky will also participate in a UN Security Council meeting focused on the Ukraine crisis on Wednesday. Notably, Russia holds a permanent, veto-wielding seat on the Security Council, and its Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is expected to speak at the meeting.

Zelensky’s presence in New York underscores the urgency of the situation in Ukraine and the need for international support as the country continues to grapple with the consequences of the ongoing conflict. His UN address is expected to highlight these pressing concerns and seek solidarity from the global community.

Zelensky is also set to engage with world leaders who hold differing views on the situation, including Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who has previously placed some blame on Ukraine for the war and criticized the billions of dollars in military aid provided to Kyiv.

In anticipation of his speech and a potential encounter with Russia’s top diplomat, Zelensky raised the question of the United Nations allowing Russia, which is the aggressor in the conflict, a seat at the tables of power. He emphasized the importance of his message being heard by the international community.

When asked if he would stay in the room to listen to Lavrov’s remarks, Zelensky expressed uncertainty, emphasizing the complexity of the situation.

Prior to his diplomatic engagements, Zelensky visited wounded Ukrainian military members at a hospital in New York. He witnessed Ukrainian soldiers who had lost limbs receiving prosthetic arms and legs, as well as rehabilitation services.

As he interacted with the soldiers, Zelensky aimed to boost their spirits, but his emotions were palpable as he witnessed the hardships they faced.
