KYIV: In a recent overnight engagement, Ukrainian defence forces successfully intercepted and downed 15 Russian drones during an aerial assault, as announced by Kyiv’s air force on Saturday.
The attack, which involved 17 Iranian-made Shahed drones, saw a robust response from Ukrainian air defences.
The Ukrainian air force revealed that Russian forces launched their attack from the northern direction, utilizing ‘Shahed-136/131’ attack UAVs. These drones were reportedly deployed from the Kursk region. The Ukrainian defence forces promptly activated air defences across northern, central, and western regions to counter the threat.
According to official reports, the Ukrainian air force in collaboration with other components of the Defense Forces of Ukraine successfully neutralized 15 of the enemy drones. This collaborative effort effectively thwarted the drone attack, underscoring the importance of coordinated air defence measures.
The conflict, which commenced in February 2022, has seen a growing prevalence of drone incursions by both sides. Ukraine, in particular, has been focusing on a counteroffensive strategy aimed at reclaiming territories currently under Russian control. As the conflict escalates, both Ukrainian and Russian forces have reported instances of drone activity not only through the air but also at sea.
Moscow’s recent intensification of attacks on Ukraine’s port infrastructure, specifically in the Black Sea and the Danube, follows the termination of a previously established agreement. This agreement facilitated the safe export of grain through the key shipping hub. The subsequent escalation has prompted a heightened level of engagement between the opposing forces.
In a related development, Russia announced that its forces had successfully destroyed Ukrainian drones targeting Moscow and its Black Sea Fleet. This further highlights the ongoing technological battle between the two sides, with drone technology playing a significant role in the conflict.
On the front lines of the conflict, Ukrainian forces reportedly breached the Russian-occupied east bank of the Kherson region, subsequently assuming strategic positions in the area. The confirmation of this development came from the region’s Russian-installed governor, signalling a noteworthy advancement for Ukrainian forces.
Additionally, diplomatic efforts have been observed as the United States communicated with Denmark and the Netherlands. In this communication, both countries were given the green light to provide Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets once Ukrainian pilots are adequately trained. This development was met with enthusiasm by Ukraine’s Minister of Defense, Oleksii Reznikov, who welcomed the news as a positive step towards strengthening Ukraine’s defensive capabilities.
