LONDON:  Britain has said that it had signed a treaty with Turkey to tackle the flow of illegal migrants from the Mediterranean country to Europe, western media reported on Tuesday.

British interior minister Suella Braverman in a statement, said that under the agreement, joint police operations against smugglers and human traffickers would be carried out.

Customs data would be exchanged more swiftly under the new memorandum of understanding.

She said the British government would also support a new Turkish police center to improve law enforcement.

UK Signs Deal with Turkey to Block Illegal Migration

Earlier, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had said London’s cooperation with Ankara, a close ally, will allow our law enforcement agencies to work together on global problems and tackle the small boat supply chain.

He added that reducing the number of illegal migrants is an important pledge for this year as he tried to thin the wide lead of the opposition Labour Party in opinion polls.

Britain has already started moving some migrants to a large residential boat on its southern coast to discourage illegal migration.
