WASHINGTON, USA: Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump announced that he will host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.
This meeting, their first since Trump’s presidency, aims to mend and strengthen their previous close relationship, which has been strained since Netanyahu congratulated President Joe Biden on his 2020 election victory.
Trump’s announcement on Truth Social expressed eagerness to welcome Netanyahu, a sentiment underscored by a recent letter from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas wishing Trump strength and safety. In the same post, Trump expressed his desire to work with Netanyahu toward peace in the Middle East.
Netanyahu, currently in the U.S. for meetings with President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, seeks to renew Congressional support for Israel’s military actions in Gaza. This trip comes at a pivotal moment as Harris enters the 2024 presidential race following Biden’s withdrawal.
Netanyahu requested the meeting with Trump during his Washington visit, a move suggesting he is hedging his bets regarding the tight U.S. presidential race. Analysts believe a potential second Trump administration would offer Netanyahu more freedom in his approach to the Gaza conflict.
During Trump’s presidency, he and Netanyahu aligned closely on policy, notably with the U.S. embassy’s relocation from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and the signing of the Abraham Accords, which normalized Israel’s relations with Bahrain and the UAE. Trump has praised Netanyahu’s role in these accords, expressing confidence that similar peace and stability could be achieved again.
Despite recent criticisms from Trump over security lapses related to the Hamas attack on Israel, both leaders appear committed to leveraging their past successes to navigate current geopolitical challenges.
