WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump marked his 80th birthday on Sunday by presiding over an unprecedented Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event on the South Lawn of the White House, combining sporting spectacle with celebrations linked to the 250th anniversary of the United States.
Branded “UFC Freedom 250”, the event featured 14 fighters competing inside the Octagon, the promotion’s signature eight-sided cage, set within a specially constructed arena known as “The Claw”. More than 4,000 spectators were expected to attend the event, while giant screens on the National Mall provided viewing space for tens of thousands more.
The White House said the cost of the event was being met entirely by the UFC. Organisers described the occasion as a unique opportunity to honour the country and showcase the sport on a global stage.
Trump, who has maintained close ties with the mixed martial arts organisation and its leadership, had earlier promoted the event as an extraordinary experience for fans. Reports indicated that several fighters were due to make their entrance from the Oval Office before proceeding to the South Lawn.
Alongside the bouts, organisers planned a programme of patriotic displays, including military bands, an aerial flyover, parachute demonstrations and a fireworks finale. Historical presentations linked to the nation’s semiquincentennial celebrations were also scheduled between fights.
UFC Chief Content Officer Craig Borsari rejected suggestions that the occasion blurred the lines between sport and politics, saying the event was intended to celebrate both the country and its athletes.
Competitors also emphasised the sporting significance of the evening. American fighter Michael Chandler described it as the biggest event in combat sports history, while French heavyweight Ciryl Gane said the occasion offered fighters an opportunity to perform before a worldwide audience.
The event proceeded after a federal judge on Friday dismissed a legal challenge brought by two local residents seeking to stop it, alleging that it was inappropriate and conflicted with public interests.
Critics have questioned the optics of staging such a lavish spectacle during a period of heightened tensions involving Iran and concerns over rising living costs. Some commentators argued that the event reflected Trump’s preference for highly theatrical public appearances.
The celebrations also coincided with renewed attention on the president’s health as he became the oldest person to have assumed office in US history. Trump has repeatedly contrasted his physical condition with that of his predecessor, Joe Biden, while the White House physician has maintained that he remains in excellent health.
In a video released earlier this week, Trump acknowledged mixed feelings about reaching the milestone age, saying he was “not happy” about turning 80 but was grateful to be celebrating the occasion.
Political analysts said the White House event underscored Trump’s flair for spectacle and his longstanding tendency to blend entertainment with politics. Last year, he marked his birthday by overseeing a major military parade in Washington commemorating the 250th anniversary of the US Army.
