Tehran Says Talks are Underway with Afghanistan over Water Rights

TEHRAN: Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says talks are underway with the interim government of Afghanistan over water rights from Helmand River, Iranian media reported on Tuesday. At a news conference, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani said that technical talks have also been held in this connection. Nasser Kanaani said the claim of drought raised by Afghan officials should be keenly probed in technical dialogues.

He has urged Afghanistan side to take responsible and practical steps to secure the water rights of the country. “Our talks with the officials of the interim government of Afghanistan are taking place at different levels and we have also conducted technical dialogue over the matter,” Kanaani maintained.

“The officials of the Afghanistan highlight Iran’s water rights based on the deal between the two sides and recognize it,” he maintained. Afghanistan has emphasized the peaceful resolution of the issue and says that there are talks between the delegation of Tehran and Kabul on how to address the problem of Iran’s water rights from Helmand River.
