BERLIN: Germany confirmed on Friday that four local employees of its government-affiliated operator, GIZ, have been detained by Taliban authorities in Afghanistan. The staff members’ detention raises concerns, prompting German officials to actively seek information about the circumstances behind their arrest.
A spokeswoman for Germany’s Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development stated, “I can confirm that the local employees of GIZ are in custody, although we have not received any official information on why they are detained.” She emphasized the seriousness of the situation and assured that all available channels are being utilized to secure the release of the detained staff.
Germany had closed its embassy in Afghanistan following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. In response to the recent detentions, a foreign ministry spokesman revealed that Berlin is engaging various channels for diplomatic efforts, including the European Union’s representation and a liaison office in Doha. However, no further details about the reasons for the detention or the identity of the individuals could be disclosed “in the interests of their safety.”
Challenges in Afghanistan After Taliban’s Return to Power
The situation highlights the challenges faced by international organizations and their personnel in Afghanistan since the Taliban regained control. The abrupt shift in governance has been marked by the imposition of a strict interpretation of law, with women disproportionately affected by laws that the United Nations has labeled a “gender-based apartheid.”
