Syrian Foreign Minister Visits Algeria, Tunisia to Revive Ties

ALGIERS: Syria’s Foreign Minister has started a trip to Algeria and Tunisia as part of efforts in order to revive its diplomatic relations in the Arab world, over a decade following his nations was globally isolated amid Assad’s crackdown on protesters against his rule.

Foreign Minister visits Algeria

Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mikdad was received on Saturday in the at Algiers airport by his Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf.

According to Algerian television, Mikdad insisted that “ties between the two nations exist and will continue to exist … beyond the variations of the situation.”

The Minister added: “My visit will be a great opportunity for talks between the two nations on the recent developments in the Arab world. We should further strengthen the bilateral ties.”

Algeria is one of the few countries that did not cut off its ties with Syria during the civil war that follo wed the 2011 civil unrest in Syria.

Mikdad notably lauded Algeria’s assistance after the devastating earthquake that killed tens of thousands in his country and Turkey.

Syrian Foreign Minister was also bearing a message from President Assad to Algerian president, the Algerian state run news agency reported.

Earlier, Mikdad visited Egypt in a step toward normalizing relationship.

He will visit Tunisia on Monday, where he will reopen Syria’s embassy.

Earlier, Tunisian President Saied announced that he had ordered Foreign Ministry of his country to appoint a new envoy to Syria. The Syrian Government also announced to appoint an envoy in Tunis.
