ISLAMABAD: The advent of the new year is coupled with unwanted rainfall and unseasonably mild temperatures which are worsening the already thin snow cover at ski resorts in Switzerland.
At a number of locations in the lowlands of Switzerland, temperatures crossed above 20 degrees Celsius on January 1.
The Splugen-Tambo ski resort on Monday announced that it was closing until further notice.
Swiss ski resort closes till further notice due to lack of snow
The resort’s operator in a statement said that due to the unfortunate conditions including heavy rainfall, lack of snow and high temperatures, we have to close the ski resort from January 2, 2023, until further notice.
It added that due to too much water it was not possible to prepare the slopes along with the fact that the snow was not freezing at night.
Splugen-Tambo’s winter sports area sits at an altitude of 1,484 to 2,215 meters.
The Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF)’s data has revealed that ski stations, especially those in low-lying areas, are facing mounting difficulties.
SLF’s data showed that during the last three decades on the Swiss Plateau there had been uniquely low snowfall. The trend was significant in statistical terms at ski stations below 1,300 meters.
