KHARTOUM: Sudan’s government said on Tuesday that it has conditionally accepted an invitation to participate in US-supported peace talks set to take place in Geneva. The Sudanese foreign ministry said that the acceptance comes with a request for a preparatory meeting with US officials ahead of the negotiations.

The conflict between Sudan’s national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which erupted in April 2023, has led to a dire humanitarian situation, with over 10 million people displaced. The United Nations has characterized the crisis as the world’s largest humanitarian emergency.

In its statement, the Sudanese government expressed its willingness to engage in peace talks but emphasized the need for detailed discussions with US representatives to ensure the effectiveness and scope of the negotiations. The preparatory meeting aims to clarify the objectives and format of the upcoming talks to address the complex issues driving the conflict.

The invitation to Geneva represents a significant diplomatic effort by the United States to facilitate dialogue between the warring parties in Sudan. The peace talks are intended to address the root causes of the conflict, promote stability, and explore avenues for a comprehensive resolution.

The ongoing violence between the Sudanese national army and the RSF has devastated communities across the country, leading to widespread displacement, destruction of infrastructure, and a severe humanitarian crisis.
