ISLAMABAD: The memories of Chotta Bazaar in Srinagar carnage, one of the deadliest massacres by Indian forces in Illegally Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), still haunt the Kashmiri people even after the passage of over 3 decades.

A report published by Kashmir Media Service on the completion of thirty-two years to the brutal massacre in Chotta Bazaar said that on 11 June 1991, the Indian paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force went berserk following an alleged clash with unknown assaulters at Zainakadal in the city.

It said the Indian forces opened indiscriminate fire with their automatic guns all the way from their camp at Syed Mansoor in the densely populated downtown area of Srinagar. At least thirty-two people were killed, while twenty-two others were wounded in the carnage. The bullets targeted shopkeepers, passers-by, a 10-year-old child, and a 75-year-old woman.

The report added that even after the passage of over 3 decades, this bloodcurdling event still causes a deep stir inside the hearts of many bereaved families whose loved ones were massacred.

It further said that 32 years have passed, but the Chotta Bazaar massacre’s memories are still fresh in the minds of Kashmiris.

Indian Massacres to Suppress Kashmiris’ Struggle

The report said that Indian forces have carried out dozens of brutal massacres like the Chotta Bazaar carnage since 1989 to suppress the freedom struggle of Kashmiris.

It pointed out that the purpose of carrying out such brutalities was to instill fear and terror among the Kashmiri people and intimidate them into submission. However, it said that the resilient and bold people of Kashmir were determined to continue their freedom struggle till it reached its logical conclusion.

The report said massacres in Indian-occupied Kashmir are ugly blots on the face of so-called Indian democracy, and the world community should take notice of genocide by Indian forces in Kashmir.
