BULAWAYO: Sri Lanka emerged victorious in a compelling encounter against Scotland, clinching an impressive 82-run triumph on Tuesday in Bulawayo. This win propelled Sri Lanka to the Super Six stage of the Cricket World Cup qualifiers, accumulating maximum points along the way.
The Sri Lankan team’s opening batsman, Pathum Nissanka, showcased his skill and determination, amassing 75 runs, while Charith Asalanka contributed a commendable 63 runs. However, the Sri Lankan innings concluded at a total of 245, as Scotland’s spinners Chris Greaves (4-32) and Mark Watt (3-52) effectively combined forces to claim seven wickets.
In response, Scotland faced an early setback, struggling at a score of 73-5. Despite an enterprising unbeaten knock of 56 runs by Chris Greaves, Scotland could only manage a disappointing total of 163, further exacerbated by two run outs in a single over that sealed their fate.
As the winners of Group B, Sri Lanka, the former champions of the 1996 World Cup, will advance to the next round with a commendable four points. They will face tough challenges ahead, as they compete against the Netherlands, Zimbabwe, and the West Indies.
Meanwhile, Scotland will carry over two points from their recent triumph over Oman, the third qualifying team from their section. This places them in a favorable position as they proceed in the tournament.
The subsequent phase of the competition is set to commence on Thursday with a match between hosts Zimbabwe and Oman. The top two finishers from the Super Six stage will secure a coveted spot in the upcoming World Cup, scheduled to take place in India during October and November.
