SAN FRANCISCO: SpaceX has announced a partnership with AI coding startup Cursor, with an option to acquire the firm for $60 billion later this year, marking a significant step in its expanding artificial intelligence strategy.
The collaboration comes as SpaceX gears up for a potential public listing and follows its recent integration of xAI, another Musk-backed venture. Cursor, founded in 2022 and based in San Francisco, focuses on AI tools designed to generate software code for business applications.
“SpaceXAI and @cursor_ai are now working closely together to create the world’s best coding and knowledge work AI,” the company said in a post on X.
The partnership aims to combine Cursor’s software expertise with SpaceX’s advanced “Colossus” AI training infrastructure to accelerate the development of next-generation AI models.
The companies say this integration will help “to build the world’s most useful models,” as competition intensifies in the AI-driven software development space.
Satellite-powered data centres
Cursor is competing with established platforms such as Microsoft-owned GitHub, while rivals including OpenAI and Anthropic continue to expand their coding tools and user bases.
The move also aligns with Musk’s broader vision to integrate AI with space-based infrastructure. Earlier this year, SpaceX absorbed xAI as part of plans to develop satellite-powered data centres to support future AI systems.
“Global electricity demand for AI simply cannot be met with terrestrial solutions… The only logical solution therefore is to transport these resource-intensive efforts to a location with vast power and space,” Musk said.
SpaceX, already a leader in reusable rocket technology and satellite deployment through its Starlink network, is expected to launch one of the largest initial public offerings in history.
Reports suggest the company could be valued at over $1.75 trillion, placing it among the world’s most valuable firms.
The partnership with Cursor signals SpaceX’s intent to play a central role in the rapidly evolving global AI ecosystem.
