South Korean Politician Attacked in Seoul

SEOUL: A lawmaker of South Korea’s ruling party, Bae Hyun-jin, was reportedly assaulted on Thursday by an unidentified assailant In Seoul’s upscale Gangnam district, reported Yonhap news agency.

Bae, a 40-year-old former news anchor and ex-spokeswoman for President Yoon Suk Yeol, was struck with what is believed to be a blunt object. She was promptly taken to the hospital, and her condition is reported as “not life-threatening.”

The incident follows closely on the heels of an attack about a month ago when the leader of the country’s opposition party, Lee Jae-myung, was stabbed in the neck while speaking to reporters in the port city of Busan.

It is pertinent to mention here that several prominent South Korean politicians have faced public attacks in recent years. In 2022, Song Young-gil, the former leader of the Democratic Party preceding Lee, was struck in the head with a blunt object.

Moreover, in 2006, Park Geun-hye, who was then the leader of the conservative party and later became president, was assaulted with a knife during a rally.
