South Africa to Transfer 12 Cheetahs to India in February as Part of Deal

ISLAMABAD: As part of a deal to reintroduce the world’s fastest land animal in India, South Africa will be sending 12 cheetahs to the South Asian country. In 2022, Namibia sent around 8 cheetahs to India.

The South African environmental department in a statement on 26 January said the agreement stipulated that annually for the next 10-12 years, South Africa will send 12 to India.

Deal aims to restore role of cheetahs in areas where the animals used to roam

The statement described the aim of the move to be achieving several ecological objectivities which included restoring cheetah’s role within India where they used to roam along with providing better economies sand livelihood options of the area’s communities.

In 1952, cheetahs became extinct in India.
