JOHANNESBURG: The Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA) was hopeful that the upcoming BRICS summit will significantly boost South Africa’s tourism sector.

TBCSA’s Chief Executive Officer, Tshifhiwa Tshivhengwa, has expressed that the summit holds the potential to attract a greater number of tourists to the country, thereby contributing to increased tourism revenue.

Highlighting the event’s importance, Tshivhengwa noted that the bookings for conference venues, restaurants, and hotels associated with the summit are expected to generate substantial income.

Tshivhengwa emphasized the need to diversify the sources of tourism by targeting countries like China, with a focus on simplifying travel procedures for Chinese tourists.

The 15th BRICS Summit is scheduled to take place in Johannesburg, South Africa from August 22 to 24.

According to Tshivhengwa, approximately 93,000 Chinese visitors explored South Africa in 2019. Despite the pandemic’s disruption to tourism and the country’s efforts to attract Chinese tourists, Tshivhengwa remains optimistic about the potential for growth in this sector.
