NEW DELHI: Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has met with Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval at the Hindon Air Force base in Uttar Pradesh following her forced resignation amidst violent protests and unrest across the country.

Indian media reported that Hasina, who resigned after more than 300 deaths related to government job quota protests, may seek political asylum in the United Kingdom.

Sheikh Hasina, who landed at the airbase near Delhi on Monday evening, is reportedly planning to depart for London later today. Her arrival and potential asylum request mark a significant shift in the political landscape of Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh Army, having assumed control of the country, announced the formation of an “interim government.” Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman addressed the nation on television, urging protesters to cease their activities and stand down. He pledged to form a transitional government and assured that the military would address the demands of the populace while ensuring the protection of life and property.

“There is a crisis. I have met with Opposition leaders, and we have decided to form an interim government to run this country. I take all responsibility and promise to protect your life and property. Your demands will be fulfilled. Please stop the violence,” General Waker-Uz-Zaman stated.

The military’s intervention came after violent protests, triggered by a contentious government job quota policy. Protesters stormed Gonobhaban, the official residence of the Prime Minister, and engaged in violent clashes with police and military personnel. The demonstrations, initially sparked by job quota issues, escalated into broader anti-government protests calling for Hasina’s resignation.

According to Indian media, India’s Border Security Force has been put on high alert along the 4,096-kilometer border with Bangladesh. Field commanders have been instructed to be vigilant and prepared for any developments.

Furthermore, Indian Railways has suspended all train services to Bangladesh, and major airlines, including Air India and IndiGo, have canceled or suspended flights to and from Dhaka due to the unstable situation.
