LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced Shan Masood as the Test captain and Shaheen Shah Afridi as the T20I captain for the Pakistan Men’s Cricket Team. The appointments come after Babar Azam’s decision to step down as captain from all three formats of the game.

Shan Masood, at 34 years old, brings a wealth of experience to the role, having featured in 30 Tests and amassing 1,597 runs, including four centuries and seven half-centuries. His captaincy tenure extends until the conclusion of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25. Shan’s first assignment as Test captain will be a challenging three-match Test series against Australia in Australia, beginning on December 14.

Shaheen Shah Afridi to Lead T20I Squad

Meanwhile, the left-arm pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, aged 23, will take charge of the T20I format. With an impressive record of 64 wickets in 52 T20Is, Shaheen has proven his mettle in the shortest format of the game. He also brings leadership experience, having captained Lahore Qalandars in the HBL PSL, guiding them to victory in the 2022 and 2023 editions.

Shaheen’s captaincy journey begins with the upcoming five-match T20I series in New Zealand, scheduled from January 12 to 21. The PCB expressed confidence in both captains, highlighting their cricketing prowess and leadership qualities.

The appointments mark a transitional phase for the Pakistan cricket team, and the PCB is set to announce the ODI captain in due course. The changes in leadership reflect a strategic move by the cricketing board to entrust the responsibility of leading the national side to individuals with a combination of experience and potential.
