CAIRO: Several Egyptian border guards were injured on Sunday after Israeli tank accidentally fired fragments of a shell at the border, a spokesperson for the Egyptian army said.
Earlier Israel’s military said one of its tanks accidentally hit an Egyptian position near the border along with the Gaza Strip.
Israel’s defense force in a statement expressed sorrow on the incident saying that it is being investigated.
Media reported that smokes can be seen following Israeli strikes at the border with Egypt.
A spokesperson for the Egyptian military confirmed the incident, but did not state how many of its soldiers were injured.
Wounded soldiers shifted to hospital
The wounded people were transferred to hospital, a witness and a medical source told media.
According to Egyptian media, witnesses said the Israeli strike would not disrupt the passage of aid to Gaza from Rafah crossing.
The incident occurred just hours after a second convoy of aid trucks entered the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing towards Gaza.

A first convoy of 20 trucks had entered the besieged Gaza strip a day earlier, but aid officials have warned that supplies of food, water and fuel are still running low in the area.
Israel had stopped aid from entering the Rafah crossing as it continued to bomb the Gaza Strip for more than two weeks.
UN officials say at least 100 trucks per day are needed in Gaza to address the crisis.
