MEXICO CITY: Armed men stormed a resort and killed seven people including a child and three women in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato, a region plagued by drug cartel violence.
Footage widely circulated on social media showed the aftermath of the incident in a palm-studded resort in the tiny town of Cortazar, about 65 kilometres south of Guanajuato city.
Cortazar’s local security department said it was uncertain who was behind the gunfire that killed the seven-year-old, three women and three men. It said that one person was seriously wounded in the La Palma resort.
In recent years, rival drug cartels had been waging brutal battles to control the region and trafficking routes through the state.
Soon after the attack, videos showed shocked adults and children walking past piles of bodies near a swimming pool.
“Heavily armed sicarios arrived and this was what happened,” said an unidentified man, using the word for hired assassins as he filmed the scene in a video shared on social med
“After the attack, (the attackers) fled the scene causing damage to the resort store and taking the security cameras and the monitor,” Cortazar’s security department said.
