Security Deal with PNG to be Based on ‘Deep Trust’: Australia’s PM

ISLAMABAD: For his first overseas visit, Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese arrived in neighboring Papua New Guinea (PNG) on Thursday, where he disclosed that his administration is in the final stages of a security pact between the two countries. Albanese explained that agreement would be based on “deep trust”.

After a lapse of four years, Albanese is the first Australian premier to visit PNG.

Delivering a speech in PNG’s parliament, Albanese said that the Bilateral Security Treaty comprises of aim that deepen defense relations and boost ties regarding national security. To achieve this, the negotiations need to conclude swiftly.

Australia’s Prime Minister added that this agreement, through mutual endeavors, will take care of PNG’s priorities that include law and order issues in order to strengthen the justice system and rule of law.

Albanese is the first foreign leader to deliver an deliver an address at Papua New Guinea’ parliament.

Some time ago, China inked a security pact with the Solomon Islands, which is a maritime neighbor of PNG. The move rattled Western countries, including the US, New Zealand, Japan and Australia.

Many regional countries are concerned China plans to set up a military base in the country. According to Albanese, under its agreement with PNG, Australia will also increase its direct investment in a bid to bring prosperity.
