ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Thursday granted the Auditor General of Pakistan (AGP) access to the SC Basha Dam funds and remarked that the AGP was also a constitutional institution.
Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial asked whether any representative of the office of AGP approached the parliament and get information about any access of the office to the dam funds.
The Chief Justice remarked that the AGP had complete access to the SC dam funds as it was also an integral part and constitutional institution like the court.
The court also ordered the concerned authorities to release Rs 2.4 billion of PSDP (Public Sector Development Program) funds for the construction of Diamir-Bhasha Dam.
Basha Dam Fund
In November 2018, the Prime Minister and ex-Chief Justice announced a fund for Basha dam where in the first 3 months about Rs 10 billion were collected into the fund.
However, collection of funds for such a mega project also received huge criticism from different sector as according to the expert it was impossible to collect such a huge amount (more than Rs2,200 billion that time) and which may take hundreds of years to achieve the target.
The critics were of the view that collecting such a huge amount will just only waste time and money of the poor country and its people.
