ARAR, Saudi Arabia: Traditional folk arts in Saudi Arabia’s Northern Borders Region continue to preserve the area’s cultural identity and heritage, passing down centuries-old customs, traditions and social values through generations while remaining a central feature of national celebrations, heritage festivals and community events.
Folk arts in the Northern Borders Region remain among the most enduring expressions of cultural identity in northern Saudi Arabia.
More than traditional performances reserved for special occasions, these art forms have become a cultural language that preserves community memory, recounts local stories, and expresses the authenticity of the region’s people and their deep connection to the desert environment, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.
Folk arts feature prominently at national, official, and community events, adding a distinctive heritage character to celebrations while introducing younger generations to the region’s cultural legacy.
Among the region’s most celebrated traditions is the “Al-Daha,” widely regarded as the Northern Borders’ signature folk performance.
Rooted in deep historical and social significance, the dance is performed by participants standing in opposing or closely aligned rows, synchronising chants, rhythmic movements, and collective gestures that symbolise unity, solidarity, and social cohesion.
Equally significant is the “rababa,” the traditional stringed instrument long associated with Bedouin life. A defining feature of gatherings and folk evenings, the rababa has become an enduring symbol of the desert culture that characterises the north of the Kingdom, according to SPA.
The region is also home to a variety of other folk traditions, each distinguished by its own performance style and rhythm while sharing a common purpose of preserving and celebrating the Kingdom’s cultural heritage.
Heritage festivals and cultural events held across the Northern Borders Region continue to showcase these traditions to residents and visitors alike, highlighting the richness and diversity of Saudi Arabia’s cultural landscape.
