The foreign ministry of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia announced on Tuesday that the country had decided to reopen its diplomatic presence in Syria.
This comes after the Arab League reinstated Syria’s government on Sunday, ending a suspension that had lasted for more than a decade.
Damascus was suspended in November 2011 for its violent response to protests that had began earlier that year and since then have resulted in the deaths of over half a million people, the displacement of millions more, and the destruction of much of the country’s infrastructure and economy.
Taking into account the decision issued by the ministerial meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of Arab States that was held in Cairo, the Kingdom has decided to resume the work of its diplomatic mission in Syria, the ministry said. “In the interests of contributing to the development of joint Arab action and strengthening security and stability in the region.”
