RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Defense Ministry spokesperson said early Tuesday that eight drones were intercepted and destroyed near the cities of Riyadh and Al-Kharj.
Earlier, the spokesperson confirmed that the Embassy of the United States, Riyadh, was targeted by two drones, according to preliminary assessments.
The incident resulted in a limited fire and minor material damage to the building.
“The US Embassy in Riyadh was attacked by two drones, according to initial assessments. The attack resulted in a limited fire and minor material damage to the building,” the spokesman said in a statement.
Saudi air defence systems also intercepted four additional drones aimed at Riyadh’s diplomatic area during the incident.
Following the attack, the embassy issued a shelter-in-place notification for American citizens in Jeddah, Riyadh, and Dhahran, urging them to remain indoors and monitor official updates.
The developments come amid escalating regional tensions following US and Israeli strikes on Iran, which have been followed by retaliatory drone and missile activity across the Gulf.
Regional authorities have heightened security around diplomatic missions and key infrastructure amid concerns of further spillover.
No injuries were reported at the embassy. Security measures in the capital were visibly strengthened, with increased patrols around government buildings and foreign missions.
