RIYADH: The Saudi Development and Reconstruction Programme for Yemen (SDRPY) has delivered 33 development projects and initiatives in the transport sector, connecting Yemeni cities and governorates, facilitating the movement of people and goods, and improving access to essential services and markets.
The projects strengthen transport and logistics networks by land, sea and air, supporting trade and economic activity while improving access to healthcare facilities, schools, markets and economic centres, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Friday.
SDRPY has expanded and rehabilitated approximately 200 kilometres of strategic roads across several governorates, improving infrastructure, road safety and connectivity between cities and regions. A key project is the Al-Abr Road, an important international route linking the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with Yemen and connecting several governorates while serving trade and passenger traffic.

The programme has completed the first two phases, covering 90 kilometres, and is currently constructing the third phase, extending 40 kilometres and bringing the road’s total length to 130 kilometres.
Internal roads have also been rehabilitated in areas including Aden, Al-Mahra and Socotra, improving traffic flow, road safety and residents’ access to healthcare, education and markets. In the Socotra Archipelago, the project has improved local transport and reduced flooding through stone paving that complements the natural landscape, while taking account of the islands’ distinctive geography and environment.
In the aviation sector, SDRPY is rehabilitating and developing Aden International Airport, Yemen’s key gateway to the region and the wider world. Previous phases included the rehabilitation of the auxiliary runway, main passenger terminal, passenger parking areas and gates, alongside the construction of air cargo facilities and improvements to operational readiness, emergency response and staff capabilities.

The third phase focuses on the main runway and the upgrading of air navigation and communication systems in line with international civil aviation standards. The project aims to improve services for passengers and airlines, increase the airport’s capacity for domestic and international flights, and strengthen Aden’s position as a major economic and urban centre.
These transport initiatives form part of the 300 development projects and programmes implemented by SDRPY since its establishment in 2018. The projects span 16 Yemeni governorates and eight sectors: education, health, water, energy, transport, agriculture and fisheries, government capacity-building, and development programmes.
