MOSCOW: Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has reportedly died in an Arctic prison, according to the prison service. Navalny rose to prominence by utilizing social media on public dissatisfaction with the Kremlin’s policies.

Navalny, a staunch critic of President Vladimir Putin, gained widespread attention for his vocal opposition to the government, even after surviving a near-fatal poisoning attack that his supporters attribute to the Kremlin.

Upon his return to Russia, he was immediately imprisoned, and despite efforts to revive him, medics were unable to resuscitate him after he lost consciousness during a walk.

Throughout his incarceration, Navalny continued to challenge Putin’s administration, frequently appearing in court hearings via grainy videos. His critiques of Putin’s actions, particularly regarding Ukraine, resonated with many young supporters and irked the Kremlin, which has been accused by rights groups of suppressing dissent through various means.

Navalny’s death raises further concerns about the Kremlin’s crackdown on dissent. His political activism included a 2018 presidential campaign, exposure of corruption scandals implicating the Kremlin, and organizing mass protests. Despite facing obstacles, including being barred from running in elections, Navalny’s persuasive speaking abilities and ability to mobilize protesters contributed to his influence.

However, Navalny’s past associations with far-right nationalism and controversial remarks have tarnished his reputation among some segments of Russian society. Additionally, the Kremlin has painted him as a Western puppet and criminal, refusing to mention his name publicly and shutting down his anti-corruption organization.

Navalny’s death marks the end of a significant figure in Russian opposition politics, leaving behind a legacy of challenging the Kremlin’s authority despite facing considerable adversity.
