MOSCOW: Russia said Wednesday that if Western countries supply heavy tanks to Ukraine, they will be destroyed on the battlefield. Kyiv awaits a decision from Germany on deliveries of Leopard 2 tanks.
“Technologically, this is a failed plan by Western countries. This is an overestimation of the true potential that these tanks will add to the Ukrainian army,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
“These tanks burn like all the rest. These tanks are just very expensive.”
Russia has offered a variety of responses to plans from Ukraine’s allies to support Ukrainian forces with the Leopard model of tanks.
Western countries await Berlin’s node
The Kremlin spokesman said earlier this week that any German supplies of Leopard tanks to Ukraine would leave a “lasting impact” on bilateral relations between Berlin and Moscow.
Peskov has previously said Western arms in Ukraine are only prolonging the conflict and resultantly increasing the suffering of Ukrainian civilians.
Germany was expected later on Wednesday to announce a decision on whether to allow other countries that maintain Leopard 2 tank stocks to send them to Ukraine.
