MOSCOW: Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday discussed strengthening the potential of economic and trade cooperation between Russia and Israel with Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen during a telephonic conversation.
“Both the foreign ministers discussed topical tasks on the bilateral agenda, emphasizing the importance of strengthening the potential for economic and trade cooperation. In this context, the need to call the next meeting of the Joint Israeli-Russian Commission was stressed,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The statement said the two foreign ministers also reviewed the situation in North Africa and the Middle East, further noting that Sergey Lavrov also briefed Eli Cohen on “certain aspects of the situation in Ukraine.”
Russia-Israel trade ties
The statement also said Russian Foreign Minister congratulated Eli Cohen on his assumption of office, adding that Sergey Lavrov expressed his “readiness to work together for strengthening diverse mutually beneficial cooperation between Israel and Russia.”
Eli Cohen was recently appointed as Foreign Minister of Israel as part of the country’s 37th government under Prime Minister (PM) Benjamin Netanyahu, who was officially sworn in at the parliament of Israel Knesset on Thursday.
Cohen will serve as the foreign minister for only a year and rotate with another member of the Knesset, Israel Katz, the country’s current energy minister.
