From Russia With Love: Can Supply Natural Gas to Pakistan, Afghanistan; Deputy PM

MOSCOW: Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said on Monday that Russia can supply natural gas to Pakistan and Afghanistan in the long term. He told the state-run news agency Tass that in the long term, Moscow can send its gas to the markets of Pakistan and Afghanistan, either utilizing the infrastructure of Central Asia, or in exchange from the territory of Iran.

He said that Moscow is also ready to resume gas supplies to European countries via the Yamal-Europe Pipeline.  According to Reuters, the Deputy Prime Minister said that the market in European remains relevant, as the natural gas shortage continues, and they have every opportunity to resume supplies. He said that the Yamal-Europe Gas Pipeline was stopped for political reasons, and remains vacant.

Natural Gas Pipeline

The Pipeline usually flows westward but has been mostly overturned since December of 2021 as Poland turned away from purchasing from Moscow in favour of Germany.

In May, Warsaw ended its contract with Moscow, after earlier rejecting Russia’s demand that it pays in roubles.

Moscow supplier Gazprom responded by cutting off the supply of gas and also said it would no longer be able to export gas through Poland following Russia imposed sanctions against the firm. The Deputy Prime Minister of Russia also reiterated that Russia is exchanging views additional gas supplies via Turkey after the creation of a hub there.
